AFCC is also highly regarded for its educational efforts in the community. The center provides educational programs focusing on health and personal growth.  Prevention is a very important component of mental health and it is especially important in helping young people become healthy adults. “Project Launch” is one program of the center which works through the local schools to help middle school and high school students make good choices for their futures.

History

In March, 1983,the counseling center opened as the Atchison Samaritan Counseling Center under the direction of Sister Janelle Maes, a Benedictine sister and a pastoral counselor who is also a licensed marriage and family therapist.  It began as an ecumenical endeavor, with Sister Janelle and local pastor John Muncy working together, and it was endorsed by the Atchison Ministerial Alliance, a group of ministers serving the local area.  In its early years it operated humbly in rent-free space donated by Atchison Hospital and Sister Janelle worked without a salary.  In 1988, the center's name was changed to All Faith Counseling Center.

Over time, the support of the civic community grew, as well as the outstanding reputation of the center. Grants and support from congregations, United Way of Northeast Kansas, client fees, donations, and assistance from Mount St. Scholastica have allowed the center to continue and flourish.  Two other certified counselors have also joined Sister Janelle at the center.  Over the years, AFCC has served over a thousand families through its services of family, marital, and individual psychotherapy.
